The name ‘CHROMATICA’  itself is a testament to the intriguing connection between colour and music. Derived from the words ‘chromatic’ and ‘chroma’, it harmoniously bridges the worlds of sound and sight. This amalgamation creates a symphony of sensations, where colours and tones converge to evoke wonder and intrigue. 

Each piece is truly special – one-of-a-kind earrings, necklaces and rings created with rare and exciting gemstones from our treasure vault. Along with a selection of stunning sapphires, we’ve included garnets, a few sunstones and tourmalines. 

Take a step into our candy-coloured world with general manager and apprentice jeweller Marie, as she discusses the power of colour, unexpected challenges and her favourite piece from CHROMATICA 2.0. 

Hey Marie, what’s the inspiration behind this latest collection? 

At Black Finch, we’re known for our love of bright hues, and this latest collection is the ultimate tribute to the power of colour, its undeniable impact on one’s mood, art practice and even personality.

As artist-first jewellers, we take inspiration from the greats like Henri Matisse, Georgia O’Keeffe, Mark Rothko and Hilma af Klint, who mastered the art of colour expression – creating depth and intrigue, communicating moods, breaking the ‘traditional rules’ and reinventing their practice. 

Owners Raymond and Davina are both artists themselves and have been procuring ethically-sourced stones from all over the world for 15+ years based on their love for asymmetry and colour. This latest collection includes rare and exciting gems from their travels, including dichroic sunstones from Tucson, Arizona.

What sets CHROMATICA 2.0 apart from the first collection?

Besides the addition of stones such as garnets, tourmalines and more sunstones, we used the same formula to create this new range. However, instead of releasing the products as ‘drops’, we decided to launch them all together so our customers could experience the full breadth of its beauty. 

We also included a few more 'special' pieces and explored Raymond's signature carved wax finish on a few of the rings – we liken it to a sculptor working with stone. There are four rings which feature this signature hand carved texture and it’s a process of taking CAD resins and working back over the top to be left with a more organic finish. A great example of our carved wax finish is our Everything Diamond Ring which you can see below. 

What were some of the challenges you faced?

Working with softer stones is definitely a challenge when it comes to setting and sadly, a precious sunstone did crack in the process of creating this collection. Poor Raymond!

Now to the fun part, what’s your favourite piece from the collection? 

I am obsessed with this piece! The centre stone is epic – a round tourmaline with the most amazing colour changes from olive green, to citrus, to pink – you can stare at it for hours. I also love how we really ramped up the colour palette and leaned into the monochromatic colour palette. We tried to place many colours next to the centre stone, it really did suit so many side stones. Lastly, I adore the asymmetry of the design which was inspired by a custom job we worked on earlier in the year.
